Disasters of 2023

The people of the United States have been ravaged by natural disasters this year. Due to the ever-changing climate, there have been 23 billion dollars in damage done this year to America through natural disasters

According to Axios, in the United States, there have been 23 different billion-dollar natural disasters during 2023. This is a record-breaking year for natural disasters. These disasters caused 253 direct and indirect deaths and caused more than 57 billion dollars in damages.

Around half of the fatalities came from Hawaii wildfires. Thunderstorms have been a nightmare for insurance companies because they have caused the most amount of damage to their finances. Hurricane season caused Florida’s Big Bend region to be hit by the strongest tropical storm it has ever seen. The cost of these natural disaster cleanups and repairs has gone up in recent years.

During the FEMA readiness campaign, a US representative named Dina Titus had this to say about the current state of America  “With natural disasters increasing in frequency and intensity, investments we make today in readiness and resilience will determine the outcome of our response tomorrow. During the reddines camping Chairman Gary Peters said “Disaster can strike at any time and place, from our coastal communities to the plains of the Midwest to every corner of the United States. While we can’t predict every disaster, we can always have a plan and be prepared.”

Since Indiana is stationed in an area where we are prone to many natural disasters it is important to know what is happening and how to be prepared and ready for the worst. Thunderstorm preparation can include securing anything that can be affected by wind or heavy rain. Tornadoes can be sudden and devastating so to avoid people hide in bathtubs and basements because a tornado is less likely to move those heavier objects. The best way to combat snowstorms is by buying things like shovels and space heaters. It is important to have food, water, money, and clothes stocked for emergencies. Backup generators or stored solar energy can also be crucial in surviving if you aren’t leaving your house.

Natural disasters tend to completely change people’s lives so there have been many things done to try and prevent or minimize damage. Our climate will ultimately be the deciding factor so people have put things into motion that will hopefully help the US do its part in reducing emotions.

Natural disasters will never go away but some things can be done over many years to make them less disastrous. At the end of the day, we can only guarantee our success if we prepare ourselves. The entire world will have to work towards a cleaner, safer future.
